Smith Block Adaptive Reuse
The historic renovation of the Smith Block combined three masonry and heavy timber buildings into one, 25,000 sf high quality office space. The renovation included a full seismic upgrade, new building systems, and custom wood windows built in an adjacent, occupied building. Sustainable features included multi-level light wells to maximize natural light and achieved a Green Globes rating.
Smith Block was built in 1872 and is one of the few surviving cast-iron buildings along Downtown Portland’s Waterfront Park. Smith Block was originally home to a row of warehouses named after its original owners William K. and Joseph S. Smith.
