North Gresham Elementary School
The replacement school for North Gresham Elementary School included the construction of a 72,000 sf, two-story school built to serve 550 students as well as the demolition of the old school facility. The tilt-up, concrete, and steel structure included 24 classrooms with common and collaboration spaces, a media center, cafeteria, covered outdoor play area, gymnasium, and parking.
Our team also overcame the logistical challenges of working around an occupied campus with detailed safety and logistics plans. Our unique solution was to involve the students by installing “port walls” every few feet on reinforced plywood barricades along the construction perimeter. We then coordinated with the art teacher to have the kids paint murals on the barricades. It was an excellent way to allow for curiosity and engagement while keeping everyone on the appropriate side of the fence.
